A day in the life of a lion is a series of images drawn by Muthu who has been looking after lions for years. You can use these drawings to help you visualize what a day in the life of a lion is like. You can also use these drawings to help you create your own board book by way of illustration and/or description. For example: All-day activities: A lioness and her cubs play and sleep. They live in a lion’s den that can be deep under the ground or high up on a cliff, with many rocks and holes. The den protects them from other animals who might want to eat them. Their home is warm, dry and safe. The cubs are born in spring after a pregnancy of three months, and they start to crawl soon afterwards. They reach their full size in about two years. The cubs play with each other, fighting over who gets to play with the best toy. The mother tends to her cubs. She hunts for them when they are small and teaches them good hunting skills when they grow up. She protects them from danger and looks after their health and well-being. When the cubs want to play there is usually plenty of space in the den for this, but when night falls she settles down with them for an evening nap; often several lions sleeping together at one time in the cool of night. The cubs soon become big and strong and they can leave their mother to join with other lions in the pride. The pride has a group of females and males with each member competing for food and territory. Whenever food is plentiful they make use of it, playing fighting with each other, chasing after antelopes and climbing trees. When food is scarce they go on a hunting trip, often leaving the pride temporarily to find food elsewhere. Any time spent away from their family is difficult for them. They feel lonely and often miss their friends from the pride also. These last few drawings are a series of ideas to help you create your own board book about a lion's life through illustration and/or description. Imagine that you are writing a book describing an African Lion's Life; you can choose to write it using all, some or none of the drawings below. The first idea is to draw yourself as an African Girl who observes the family of lions at length. If you want to, you could include photographs of your own family inside the back cover. Working with your thoughts and ideas about life with lions, write a description of what you see in simple language suitable for young children. Be sure to include your thoughts about what it is like for the cubs when they leave their mother and how it must feel to be lonely without each other. cfa1e77820
